ID 600: User Centered Design: Precedent Study Assignment

Introduction to precedent studies

For your assignment, you will need to find precedent studies and the resources below will help you with this project.  Included are sample searches in Google, MULibrary Search, and Google Scholar. You can also do the same type of searching in any of the MU databases. Here is a link to the PRECEDE database: https://precede.perkinswill.com/

Locating existing precent studies

It can be helpful to look at existing precendent studies to get an idea of what your final project should look like.

Research tips

You will get limited results if you do a keyword search for "precedent studies" in the databases because that term is not just as a subject header or frequently when writing about projects.  When researching the different aspects you need for your precedent study you can search for:

  • your building type AND wayfinding OR navigation
  • your building type AND sustainability
  • your building type AND construction
  • your building type AND lighting
  • your building type AND your theory (for example "office design" AND biophilic design)

See the sample searches below for ides about how you can get started with your research!

Sample MULibrary Search

If you are unfamiliar with MULibrary Search you can take this quick tutorial to help you learn how to use it!

Reminder to use phrase searching (putting specific phrases in quotation marks) will get you the most relevant results in the quickest amount of time!

MULibrary search bar with the search for "office building" AND "biophillic design"

Sample Google Scholar Search

Google Scholar is a great resource for ID students because it is multidisciplinary.  Remember to access Google Scholar via the MU Databases so that you are automatically redirected to the full text of the articles you need.

If you are unfamiliar with Google Scholar you can check out a short tutorial on how to use it.

Sample Google Search

Simple search - remember you have to use reputable sources! You must evaluate every website to ensure the quality of the content - avoid blogs! Google search for hospital AND wayfinding

Phrase searching example.  When you want the database to look for words in a particular order use phrase search by putting the words in quotation marks.  This is will return much more relevant results in Google and any other database.
