VA, MD & DC Building Codes

VIRGINIA UNIFORM STATEWIDE BUILDING CODE (USBC)
The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) contains the building regulations that must be complied with when constructing a new building, structure, or an addition to an existing building. They must also be used when maintaining or repairing an existing building or renovating or changing the use of a building or structure.
2018 Virginia Construction Code
This is an example of a construction code freely available from the International Code Council (ICC) - navigate the resource using the table of contents on the left hand side. A variety of other codes and standards are also freely available from the ICC, including FEMA, HUD, and CPSC.
Maryland Codes Administration - Building Codes
The Maryland Codes Administration helps to ensure that buildings erected in Maryland meet applicable standards for health and safety. Codes Administration establishes and enforces standards for industrialized/modular buildings and is responsible for inspecting and certifying these building units at the factory. Codes Administration assists HUD by processing consumer complaints for the Manufactured/ Mobile Home Program. Codes Administration provides technical assistance to local governments, industry and the public to ensure that buildings are energy efficient and accessible to individuals with disabilities.
District of Columbia Construction Codes
Numerous laws and regulations have been adopted in the District of Columbia to govern the construction, alteration, and demolition of buildings and structures, and the maintenance of all premises in the District of Columbia including lots, parcels of land, buildings and structures. DCRA enforces the District of Columbia Construction Codes (12 DCMR) and portions of the Housing Code (14 DCMR, Chapters 1-15) which are applicable to housing businesses. DCRA also enforces those portions of the D.C. Official Code that relate to buildings and structures, including Title 6 (Housing and Building Restrictions and Regulations) and Title 42 (Real Property). DCRA publishes Administrative Bulletins in the DC Register, to communicate official Department policies and interpretations, in order to assist applicants, staff and the public in following operational, technical and legal procedures. DCRA’s Administrative Bulletins are available on the DCRA website.
2021 International Green Construction Code (IgCC)

ADA Standards

ADA Standards for Accessible Design
The Department of Justice’s revised regulations for Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) were published in the Federal Register on September 15, 2010. These regulations adopted revised, enforceable accessibility standards called the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, "2010 Standards." On March 15, 2012, compliance with the 2010 Standards was required for new construction and alterations under Titles II and III. March 15, 2012, is also the compliance date for using the 2010 Standards for program accessibility and barrier removal.
