Levels of Evidence

Level I 

Systematic review or meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs)

Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines based on systematic reviews 

Level II

A well-designed RCT

Level III

Controlled trial without randomization (quasiexperimental study) 

Level IV

Single nonexperimental study (case-control, correlational, cohort studies)

Level V

Systematic reviews of descriptive and qualitative studies 

Level VI

Single descriptive or qualitative study 

Level VII

Opinion of authorities and/or reports of expert committees
