Catalog, scholarly article, call number, abstract, chat, circulation, copyright, citation, reserves, database, stacks, reference...the library comes with its own vocabulary.
These words can be confusing if you're not sure what they mean. This page will help you find definitions, but if you're still confused, our library faculty and staff are always here to help you out!
Here are some of the most common words you may encounter at the MU Library.
Ballston Coakley Library Extension (BCLE) - Our library location at the Ballston Center, located on the 3rd floor.
Call number- The code on the spine of the book that tells you where it is located in the library. (There is always someone available to help you find a book if you need it).
Canvas- Marymount's Learning Management System, and your go-to stop for information about your classes including library resources.
Chat- the system that allows you to instant message with a librarian online.
Citation/citing your sources- in order to avoid plagiarism, giving credit to the person whose ideas you are using for your paper/project. There are several citation styles such as MLA, APA, and Chicago. Ask a librarian for more information!
Circulation desk- the place you can check out books, reserved textbooks, and other materials.
Database- a collection of information that can be searched online through the MU Library website.
Interlibrary loan (ILL)- the process by which you can get articles and books that are not owned by Marymount from other libraries.
Marymount ID- your Marymount-issued ID card. It's the easiest way to check out materials at the library.
MULibrary Search- our tool for finding books, ebooks, and some articles; sometimes referred to as the library catalog.
MUPortal- the login page for all of your Marymount-related accounts, including library access.
Stacks - Stacks, or bookstacks, are rows of shelves holding print books and other physical materials in the library collection. Bookstacks are located on all four floors of the Reinsch Library. Bookstacks also are located at BCLE.
Textbook- a required book for your classes.
Reference desk- the place where a librarian can help you with your research.
Reserves- books (including textbooks) that can be checked out for a short period of time. Often, they will need to stay inside the library.
WEPA- wireless printing stations. The library has two WEPA printers. Each semester, you get $25 on your Marymount ID to print using WEPA.
WRLC- the Washington Research Library Consortium. We have access to almost all of the books at our 9 partner schools. Books you request from WRLC schools can come to Marymount in just a few days for you to check out. WRLC schools are:
