Streaming Media at Marymount

This page will provide some basic information about the ways in which we can purchase or license streaming video content, as well as the sources of streaming video currently available for Marymount students, faculty, and staff use.

How to search for streaming media in MULibrary Search

Terms to know

Subscription- an annual fee is paid for a set of content with unlimited viewing rights. Films on Demand and Alexander Street Press are examples of subscription streaming services.

Patron Driven Acquisitions (PDA)- users "trigger" a certain video to be purchased.  The trigger varies by vendor, but usually includes a combination of seconds the video is played and number of times it is viewed.  Kanopy can function as a PDA service.

Mediated acquisition- librarians decide what can be purchased based on patron request.  Mediated acquisition can be combined with PDA.  Kanopy can also function in the mediated acquisition model.

Evidence-Based Acquisitions (EBA)- Users are granted content to a set of videos for a specified period.  When the period is up, the statistics are reviewed, and the purchasing decisions can be made using the statistics.

Deposit account- PDA, and usually EBA plans require upfront payment.  Purchases are deducted from the account.  We use a deposit account for Kanopy.

Public performance rights- allows the video to be shown at a campus-wide event, such as a video screening sponsored by a student organization or department.  Public performance rights are not required for regular class instruction.

License- an alternative to purchasing content directly, licensing usually allows unlimited access to a streaming resource for a limited period of time (e.g. 1 year) for a fee.

Digitization rights- a DVD can be purchased with the option of digitizing it ourselves and hosting on a secure server, available only to authorized users.

Hosting fee- a vendor charge for hosting content, in addition to the licensing of or subscription to individual media.  We pay a yearly hosting fee to Sage for access to their Education Collection.
