Advertising to help identify target markets

Where your brand advertises can tell you a lot about their target market.  For example, if a brand advertises in Elle magazine exclusively versus a brand that only runs a campaign in People magazine what can we tell about these two consumer bases?

  • Well a little research into the Elle reader tells me that the average reader is a female, average age of 37.7 with an income of about $70 grand. 
    • ​You can find information like this in advertisers media kit information.  See the example from Elle in the link below. 
    • If your brand advertises in Elle magazine they are trying to reach the same audience!

How about People magazine?  Who is their audience?  A look at their media kit reveals their female readers are mostly college graduates, have dual household incomes and are 68% working women.  What conclusions can you draw about your brand's target audience if they advertise in People magainze?
