Interior Design Program Guide: Formatting Your Paper

Assistance with Formatting your Paper

Formatting Your APA Paper

The updated 7th edition of the American Psychological Association Style Guide reflects a shift toward clearer, accessible, bias- free language.  Notable changes include:

  • Inclusion of the singular they in order to be more inclusive and respectful when gender is unknown or irrelevant
  • In full length papers there is no longer a requirement for the running header
  • Publisher location is no longer included in the full citation
  • URLs are no longer preceded by “Retrieved from,” unless a retrieval date is needed
  • No longer requires Times New Roman but rather any sans serif font is acceptable
  • Both DOI numbers and URLs are presented as hyperlinks (e.g. https://doi.org/10.1111/aman.13933)

The library maintains a copy of the 7th edition style guide. Please consult your professor for their prefered formatting, as APA 7th edition allows more flexibility in formatting.

Formatting Your Reference List Entries

A reference generally has four elements, regardless if it's print or online. Each element answers a question:

  • author: Who is responsible for this work?
  • date: When was this work published?
  • title: What is this work called?
  • source: Where can I retrieve this work?
